He was able to figure out how to attack Tampa 2 against Nebraska, but some of those throws wouldn’t be available against a quarters shell.Information about Gifted and Talented Gifted and Talented Definition from Douglas County School District There are a lot of ways to dress up a defense pre-snap that hide whether a team is playing quarters or three-deep, and I’m curious to see whether Sanders can identify coverage shells as they change. ![]() Sanders has logged just eight dropbacks against that particular coverage so far this year. For all the man coverage and three-deep we expect to see in those spots, the Ducks also use quarters on about 20 percent of their coverage snaps. Keep an eye on every third down Colorado’s offense has Saturday. Using nontraditional rushers to affect the quarterback while playing Cover 1 or 3 is a major component of this defense on first and second downs. If you haven’t watched much Oregon football of late, think back to the unique 2021 Georgia defense, which seemed to be blitzing linebackers and DBs constantly without compromising itself in coverage. Lanning is going to challenge Sanders to work diligently pre-snap to identify potential rushers and to make quick decisions post-snap. Even when he makes the right decision with the ball, that will be a problematic tendency to have as he starts facing defenses with more speed and better pass rushers than his nonconference opponents had to offer. ![]() He does pretty well going through a progression to its completion, but he has a habit of staring down receivers when coverage is tight. When you combine clips like the ones above with how Sanders looked in the first halves against Colorado State and Nebraska, it’s clear he is more of an accurate passer than an anticipatory one right now, and that’s OK given where he is on his developmental curve. If you don’t make that throw, it’s not the end of the world, but then you have to commit to scrambling into the underneath voids left by the zone droppers, rather than extending the play in hopes of a big-throw opportunity. You can see the moment when the dig route is breaking toward the logo, and there are some quarterbacks with the arm talent and gumption to rip that throw before the middle linebacker can break on it. The Huskers manipulated Colorado’s protection by changing who rushed and who dropped, while Sanders waited for something to come open. Nebraska caused him a lot of trouble by “mugging” the front - walking linebackers/defensive backs up to the line of scrimmage. Not only is he being sacked more often in those spots, but he’s also having to pass on the move where he’s less effective or dropping his eyes to avoid the rush. ![]() The data all points toward Oregon causing problems for Sanders, who ranks 75th in EPA per dropback against man blitzes (Cover 1 with five or more pass rushers). Sanders is holding the ball too long to be as accurate as he can be, and his lack of elite physical traits makes him susceptible to blitzes and pass rushers. He has the 17th-longest average time to throw in the FBS (2.83 seconds) and the 12th-highest sack rate (11 percent). For as accurate, well prepared and coachable as Sanders has proved to be, he still hasn’t developed a way to get through his progressions quickly. However, underlying metrics reveal some vulnerabilities in Sanders’ game that I expect to decide Saturday’s matchup with Oregon. In layman’s terms, when he’s had chances against man, he has punished defenses with big gains or scores - evidenced on film by how well he works in the middle of the field and one-on-ones.
